World Pharmacists Day – Statement by Pharmaceutical Society NI President, Dr Geraldine O’Hare

On behalf of the Council and staff of the Pharmaceutical Society NI, I would like to offer our endorsement of the theme of this year’s World Pharmacists Day – Meeting Global Health Needs. We know just how important pharmacists and pharmacies are in meeting the needs of patients here in Northern Ireland, where the role of our members is becoming increasingly central to delivering better health outcomes, especially in communities experiencing multiple indicators of deprivation.

Pharmacists in Northern Ireland were central to managing the health and wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of patients throughout the pandemic, and their role has since been expanded under both the Pharmacy First Service, and the increasing number of pharmacists who are practicing as independent prescribers.

Our members are the medications experts of the health service and are often the first point of primary care that a patient will encounter when they are seeking treatment.

The Pharmaceutical Society NI is dedicated to upholding the highest possible standards for patients and the public, while championing the profession and ensuring that pharmacists in Northern Ireland get the recognition and respect they deserve as healthcare professionals.
